Liquid-proofed mattress in one of the buildings that still remained at Western Center in 2008. Locally known as “Morganza” for the town which housed it, most of the campus was demolished by 2009 and the historic Administration Building - best known for its cameo as the exterior of the asylum which housed Hannibal Lecter in “The Silence of the Lambs” - was destroyed in 2011. Western Center served several purposes over the years, including as a custodial asylum for people deemed mentally retarded by the state, and as a reform school for troubled youth. It had a dismal reputation during all of its various uses.

Marina Abramovic and Ulay, Death Self, 1977. This performance consisted of the two artists seated in front of each other, connected at the mouth. They took in each other’s breaths until all of their available oxygen had been used up. The performance lasted only 17 minutes, resulting in both artists collapsing unconscious to the floor, having filled their lungs with carbon dioxide. This personal piece explored the idea of an individual’s ability to absorb the life of another person, exchanging and destroying it.
